Walter Dexter

Eclectic Gallery has received a collection of early work and Raku pieces by renowned Canadian ceramic artist Walter Dexter. One of Canada's most widely known potters, Walter uses bold innovative techniques. By 1957 he became a pioneer of the Japanese Raku process in Canada. His high fired stoneware, Raku pots and Torso Vases gained him an international following. His works are an expression of pure imagination. In 1992, he received the Saidye Bronfman Award (now Governor General's Award) for artistic excellence. He is past director of the Canadian Crafts Council and past president of Ceramicists Canada. Exhibitions of his work have shown across Canada including the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria, as well as Belgium, Czechoslovakia, England, Finland, Italy, Japan and United States. A member of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts and Victoria's Limners, he has made Victoria home since 1975. I find my greatest pleasure in doing the work... to free my mind from extraneous interruptions and thoughts.
