Three Gilders

Master gilder, Anthony Thorn, is an Oak Bay resident, following the tradition of gilders, painters and carvers techniques dating back a thousand years revived during the Renaissance. Mr.Thorn has recent abstract paintings that invite the viewer to contemplate their meaning. His meticulously detailed wall jewels display the rich adornment of precious metals, gemstones, and exotic wood and bone. Recently he contributed a scholarly article Techniques of Gilders a survey of the many methods of gilding through the ages presented to the University of Regina, Archives. Georgia Angelopoulos, member of the Society of Scribes and Illuminators, England, often employs traditional tools and materials with medieval gilding and illuminating techniques. Her contemporary artistic compositions are in collections of Kings College, London, and headquarters for the European Union, Brussels. Locally, she is commissioned to scribe names of visiting royalty and heads of state in the Distinguished Visitors Book, Government House. Renowned glass artist and abstract painter, Horst Molleken, employs special gilding techniques, creating rich luminous landscapes with oil, acrylic, ink, watercolour and 24 carat gold. He is able to pack a lot of expression into a small image. Since receiving his artistic training in Essen, Germany, Horst has exhibited in galleries and museums throughout Europe, including England, Germany, France, Holland, and Switzerland. He has been a resident in Oak Bay since 1996.
